The Applied Ethics Institute and the Public Policy Institute of St. Petersburg College will be sponsoring a public forum to discuss "The Ethics of Being a United States Citizen". This will be an opportunity for members of the pubic and our students to listen and pose questions to community leaders and elected officials on this topic.
Some of the many issues to be discussed will include: What are our ethical and civic obligations as citizens of the United States? Do we as citizens have an ethical obligation to vote and actively participate in our democratic process? Do we have a civic responsibility to pay more taxes when basic services are being greatly reduced due to budget shortfalls? Should we hold our public officials to a higher standard for their personal, as well as their professional ethical lapses?
In an age where many people seem to have lost interest in even knowing how their own elected officials are voting on legislation that will directly impact them, we feel it is vital to open a dialog with leaders of our community and the public on this matter. Democracy is a form of government ran by the people. If the people are not participating, then who is really running our country?
This forum is open to our students as well as the general public. Please mark it on your calendars. Should you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to contact Applied Ethics Instructor, Dr. Laurie King, at 727-394-6035.
